Jesper Armbrust is European Champion 2021

Congratulations to Denmark again, for winning another European Title in the Contender Class. Jesper Armbrust sailed a solid series during a difficult week in Warnemünde in all conditions. The Elvström designer placed himself in front of Max Billerbeck from Germany and Sören Andreasen from Denmark.

The ICA thanks the organizer who took it with great sportmanship that the planned Worlds had to be downgraded to a European Championship due to the pandemic.

AGM 2021 video meeting

Published on Saturday July 24th, 2021.

The ICA Committee calls for the Anual General Meeting (AGM) for 2021 on Sunday October 3rd, 2021 at 08:00 UTC  by means of a video conference. Meeting details will be announced later.

Travel restriction due to the pandemic led to the cancelation of the 2020 and 2021 Worlds events. Consequently, the Annual General Meetings that are normally held during a Worlds event also did not take place. Therefor the Committee proposes an alternative in the form of an AGM by means of video conferencing, to enable every Contender Class member to participate safely.

The preliminary agenda is as follows:

  1. Opening
  2. Apologies
  3. Previous Minutes
  4. Matters Arising
  5. Presidents Report.
  6. Treasurers Report.
  7. Technical Report.
  8. Secretaries Report.
  9. Media Report.
  10. International Competition Report
  11. Class Rules Proposals
  12. Election of Officers.
  13. General Business

ICA Press release May 2020

ICA issued the followin press release in May 2020:

PRESS RELEASE

1 May 2020

COVID-19 Pandemic Impact

Due to the impact of COVID-19 the World Championship event scheduled to be held at Medemblik, Netherlands in August 2020 has been regretfully cancelled.

All entrants have had their entry fees refunded.

The World Championship events currently scheduled for Germany and Australia in 2021 and 2022 respectively will, at this stage, proceed as planned.

ICA recognises the current situation may present difficulties for National Associations, therefore and also due to there being no World Championship event this year the ICA will waive 2020 fees to National Associations.

The ICA intends to postpone the Annual General Meeting of the Association until 2021 unless members indicate there is urgent business to be discussed in which case a virtual meeting will be explored.

ICA sends best wishes to all Contender sailors during the COVID-19 Pandemic Crisis and looks forward to resuming normal activities when it is safe to do so.

Max Billerbeck wins Contender Worlds 2019

Max Billerbeck from Germany wins the Contender Worlds 2019 in Quiberon, France. The Worlds had a line-up of 127 boats, and the conditions were very light. Only 7 of the scheduled 10 races were sailed and only 3 races on the first 3 days. This left event organisers to split the fleets based only on 3 sailed races, and no drops.
Graham Scott from Great Britain finished 2nd and Soren Andreasen from Denmark 3rd.

2018 BALLOT INSTRUCTIONS

The following are proposed changes for the International Contender Class Rules. This ballot comprises of proposed rule changes that were approved (received the required 2/3 majority) at the 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Medemblik and the AGM at Sonderborg in 2017 and the AGM in McCrae in 2018. The delay for the 2015 proposal is due to failure to agree a wording with ISAF for the electronic equipment rule. This will need to be put into SI’s in the future if required at a regatta.

The proposals are now presented to the whole eligible (paid up) membership of the International Contender Association as at the time of the AGM.in McCrea. National Secretaries or other responsible officers shall distribute this ballot to eligible members. Members who wish to vote must do so on this ballot paper and then return this ballot to an officer representing his/her country. Either in hard copy or electronically. That officer will:

  • Verify that the voter is eligible to vote:
  • Count the votes for and against the proposal.
  • Further, will report the sail number and name of each voter

The results of the balloting for each country shall be returned to the Secretary of the International Contender Association. Final NA results shall be emailed to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Our rules state that the ballot can take a maximum of 3 months (07 June 2018) for the returns to come back to the secretary and only those returns shall be counted.
